Karate fails to convince IOC
Rugby 7's and Golf have been chosen ahead of Karate for Olympic Games inclusion
"I feel that it is a very negative message for those on the outside," World Karate  Federation chief Antonio Espinos said after the shortlist was announced. "I don't see when on the horizon we might have this possibility."
"I don't know how much more we can do, in terms of development of our sport, to convince the IOC," he said of the sport which claims to have 100 million active athletes of all ages worldwide.

WKF presentation before the IOC Executive Board
A World Karate Federation delegation presented the candidature of the WKF and Karate for the 2016 Olympic Games to the International Olympic Committee Executive Board Monday 15th June 2009
The presentation was well received by the IOC Executive Board; it covered all aspects of both the World Karate Federation and of the sport of Karate, including the added value that Karate will give to the Olympic Program and vice-versa, and also the impact that the acceptance of Karate will have on the push of the social values of Karate worldwide. Other outstanding features highlighted were the universality of the sport and the simplicity and low cost that the incorporation of Karate to the Games would suppose.
Now the IOC Executive Board will meet again in Berlin on the 13th August 2009 and will decide what 2 sports (maximum) from the 7 candidates it will propose and submit to the Copenhagen IOC Session for approval; this will take place on the 9th October 2009.

Japan Trip

Rafe Williams was lucky enough to travel to Japan recently, here he kindly shares his experience with us. Rafe is one of our senior colts at the Helensville dojo. Thanks Rafe!

Last term holidays I took a trip across the Pacific Ocean to Japan for two weeks. I travelled with ten friends and two teachers. We arrived in Osaka in an airport on a man made island. We did several things while in Japan starting in Osaka staying at a youth hostel for five nights. Our second day there we watched a historical sport, sumo wrestling. It was a new experience in sports for me. We then went to Himeji Castle which was built in 1333-1346. It is now one of twelve original castles still remaining in Japan. The castle was an interesting place to see and very cool. The next day we visited a ninja museum. That was the coolest part of the trip so far. They were so fast and had pin point accuracy. I got the chance to throw a few shuriken but I wasn't very good. Three days later we took a bullet train to Tokyo reaching speeds of up to 200km/h. Tokyo was all it was said to be and the night life was awesome. One terminal in Tokyo has four million people using it a day. That's the population of New Zealand. Going to Hiroshima was a very interesting and learning experience. I learnt a lot about the atomic bomb and WWII. Nearing the end of the trip we got to home stay in a very small town called Gokase. The next day we got to go to a school. It was nice to talk to people our age and I made a lot of friends. Those two days were the best part of the trip. I really enjoyed those two weeks and I would like to go back to Japan.
