HISTORIC DECISION:
KARATE IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES 2020

Karate is in the Olympic Games. The 129th Session of the International Olympic Committee being held in Rio de Janeiro has decided to incorporate the sport of Karate in the programme of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This decision represents an outstanding and ground-breaking moment for this ancient discipline.

The hopes and dreams of millions of Karatekas around the world came true today. After hundreds of years of history of this sport, and following many years of hard work by the WKF, the Karate family has finally fulfilled their dream of seeing this discipline in the Olympic Games. This will be accomplished precisely in Tokyo, the capital city of the birth nation of the sport.

In its press release, IOC described the decision as “the most comprehensive evolution of the Olympic programme in modern history”.

Karate dropped from shortlist for 2020 Olympics.
Squash, baseball/softball and wrestling beat off five other sports to remain in contention to be added to the Olympic Games programme in 2020.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide on one remaining place in the programme in September.

The IOC has dropped wushu, wakeboarding, roller sports, karate and sport climbing from the shortlist.
"It was never going to be an easy decision," said IOC President Jacques Rogge.
"But I feel my colleagues on the board made a good decision in selecting baseball/softball, squash and wrestling to be put forward in Buenos Aires [where the decision will be made]."

Karate fails to convince IOC
Rugby 7's and Golf have been chosen ahead of Karate for Olympic Games inclusion
"I feel that it is a very negative message for those on the outside," World Karate  Federation chief Antonio Espinos said after the shortlist was announced. "I don't see when on the horizon we might have this possibility."
"I don't know how much more we can do, in terms of development of our sport, to convince the IOC," he said of the sport which claims to have 100 million active athletes of all ages worldwide.

WKF presentation before the IOC Executive Board
A World Karate Federation delegation presented the candidature of the WKF and Karate for the 2016 Olympic Games to the International Olympic Committee Executive Board Monday 15th June 2009
The presentation was well received by the IOC Executive Board; it covered all aspects of both the World Karate Federation and of the sport of Karate, including the added value that Karate will give to the Olympic Program and vice-versa, and also the impact that the acceptance of Karate will have on the push of the social values of Karate worldwide. Other outstanding features highlighted were the universality of the sport and the simplicity and low cost that the incorporation of Karate to the Games would suppose.
Now the IOC Executive Board will meet again in Berlin on the 13th August 2009 and will decide what 2 sports (maximum) from the 7 candidates it will propose and submit to the Copenhagen IOC Session for approval; this will take place on the 9th October 2009.
